It was a dark and stormy day when 40 Osman Tennis juniors gathered on Saturday 6th September for the annual Lakesmere Cup junior tennis tournament at River Park Tennis Centre. Not deterred by the weather - – indeed, like the neighbouring ducks the players seemed to revel in it, even if parental umpiring commitments were tested to the limit - matches soon began with great enthusiasm and eyes on the trophies up for grabs.
The 12-15 year olds had an early start at 8am and battled through the adverse conditions to the finals. The boys’ final was played out between the twins, James and Harry Palmer; we think it was James clinching a fine win in a closely fought contest, though if they’d swapped shirts on the change of ends no-one would have known. The girls provided an equally exciting final with Emma Rowland overcoming a determined Poppy Bayles. Of the other finals, Max Kirwin defeated Dominic Cramp (9-11 Boys) and Calyope Neale beat Izzy Williams (8 and Under Girls).
After gripping finals, the cups were presented by Mark Davey, Managing Director of Lakesmere and flagship sponsor of Osman Tennis. Mr Davey joked that given that the tournament’s 6-year run of perfect weather had finally ended, he and his company just might have to provide a Wimbledon-style roof for Osman Tennis!
