Osman Tennis hosts two Apsley League mixed doubles teams, the ridiculously successful first team, stalwarts and recent champions of the Premier Division, and the equally dynamic second team, currently marauding their way through Division 3. The first team is an international affair, with players hailing from the Antipodes, the States, La France, and others who travel across counties via planes, trains and automobiles. The second team is a more local affair, with Hampshire’s most committed, and let’s not deny it, attractive, players stuffing their strut.

Of course, though the tennis is an undoubted priority, match-day Saturday nights in Winchester are the highlight. As the ancient Chinese philosopher spake, “The team that drinks, brags, laughs and flirts together is the team that perennially finishes second.” This is the kind of wisdom to be heard in pre-match pavilion pump-ups. If those pavilion walls could talk what tales they would tell…
